FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. “All I do is cry. Is that normal?”
A. It is normal, okay and even healthy to cry or weep. There is a time to weep. Crying

brings a physical release of pressure. You will miss your loved one. It is okay to show

human emotions. However, you cannot allow a spirit of grief to consume you. You must

keep your emotions in balance. You may cry for a time, but the day and time should

come when you cry less. Over time, you should begin to adjust to your altered life.

Eventually you should move from, “All I do is cry” to, “Some days I don’t cry at all.”

Q. “Why am I so angry?”
A. There may be many reasons for your anger. Please see the Stages of Grief and
the Obstacles to Grieving. You must work through your anger. Anger is a deadly
emotion.

Q. “Is it okay to visit the gravesite?”
A. There is no right or wrong about visiting the gravesite of your loved one. The

question you have to ask is, why are you visiting the gravesite? What is your purpose?

You want to focus your time and attention on the good and positive memories of your
loved one. The gravesite is a constant reminder of death. You are not dishonoring
your loved one if you don’t go to the grave and plant flowers or place wreaths
or sit and visit. Honor was given when they were alive. If you focus on your loved
one’s death, it will be more difficult for you to move successfully through the grieving
process.

On a personal note, I visit my mother’s gravesite once or twice a year to ensure
the lawn is manicured and that the grave is not disturbed because it is an old public
cemetery with no maintenance personnel. I realize it is only her body in the grave. She
is not there. I choose not to focus on her death, but on her life.  She will always be alive

in my heart!
